~ Vocal and singing ~
Ever since I graduated from the Academy of Music in 1984 I have been working as a singer, music teacher, vocal coach and singing teacher, as well as a pianist in theatre orchestras of different kinds.
Singing
I sing most genres, although I prefer to sing Jazz, Rock and Classical music. Most time is spent with my band Dame Wiggens. Sometimes I sing in the church, either as a soloist or in a choir. I have been singing as a background vocalist with many entertainment, pop, jazz or country artists on concerts and in TV.
I had a really fun job not so long ago. I was asked in emergency to sing on a new year's concert in Denmark. The repertoire was Wiener music in a Wiener trio. The regular singer had caught a bad flu and they couldn't cancel the concert, since it was two days away and already sold out with 500 tickets. I didn't have a wiener repertoire so I started practising! I met the other two musicians during a few hours the day before the concert. The concert went really well, and due to the audience it was a roof raiser.
Teaching singing
Currently I teach singing and vocal at the Academy of Music in Malmö since 1993. When teaching at the Academy there are curriculums to follow to provide the becoming music teachers with the appropriate knowledge of their voices, as well as some knowledge about voice building.
I also welcome private vocal students for individual lessons. I am working with a wide range of voices, from a beginner to a professional singer. During our first meeting I listen to the voice and what the singing student would like to learn. Some students just want to sing songs, some want to learn more about their voices or even prepare for a music education, while others have a specific voice problem to work with. Together we make a plan for the lessons, how often, how long and what we are going to work with. This way each student will have their own personal plan for singing lessons.
Vocal coach or Singing teacher?
A vocal coach works during a short time to correct some problems in a voice or to increase a voice in a specific area. Usually a vocal coach is needed for professional singers who already know lots about their voice and know how to work with it continuously.
A singing teacher works during a long or unspecified time with building a voice. The student could be a beginner or someone who has been singing a lot. The singing teacher gives tools for voice techniques, practising, interpretation, music knowledge, remembering lyrics and so on.
Working with a singing teacher gives you a profound knowledge of your voice in many different situations, while working with a vocal coach helps you with a specific problem or directs you to a specific goal. A singer who works with a vocal coach has most often already been working with a singing teacher before, or has the experience from singing professionally as well as a profound knowledge about voice techniques.
